Quarterly Meeting

Tab-based Data Collection

Domestic Cooking

Excessive smoke emitting from burning of biomass fuel requiring constant feeding of the fire, and causing difficulty in breathing and irritation of eyes.

Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), a clean fuel used for smart cooking does not generate smoke.
Assessment of Air Pollution Levels

UPAS, personal air quality monitor, worn by participant for 24 hours.

Ambient air quality monitoring device PurpleAir Flex, placed in kitchen for 48 hours.
Clinic Visit

Fieldworker examines participant’s blood pressure (pre-clinical sign of cardiopulmonary disease

Fieldworker collects blood samples for later assessment of inflammation and immune function in relation to household air pollution exposure.
Courtyard Group Discussions

Participants engaged in group discussions in the courtyards regarding the health risks associated with burning of biomass fuel.

Participants receive instructions to operate android phones for receiving mobile health (mHealth) messages (through voice or video) sent to their phones.
